What We Do

SpeakUp! is a nonprofit 501 (c)(3) that supports young people as they navigate their journey to adulthood by BOTH helping young people talk honestly about their worries, concerns and challenges to important parenting adults in their lives AND positioning those adults to better listen, guide, and support them. We offer a school-based, youth-led program in 31 middle and high schools in the Greater Philadelphia area and New Jersey. Here, youth, parenting adults, and school adults come TOGETHER to talk openly about topics the youth want to discuss such as stress, mental health, relationships, drugs and alcohol, social media and more. We complement this with our “Continue the Conversation” series which gives adults more chances to learn skills and gain confidence in talking about these same topics.

Our Programs

Your support enables us to bring our comprehensive programs to more schools, youth, and families:

School-based
Programming

Our School-Based Program engages youth, school adults and parenting adults together in supportive conversations. Student leaders and school adults are trained to facilitate these sessions.

Students can join their school’s Student Leadership Team to help choose the topics that matter to them and plan and market their SpeakUp! event.

School adults can attend our facilitator training, a professional development opportunity that equips them with the skills to facilitate meaningful conversations on challenging topics that matter to youth and build supportive relationships.

Community-based
Programming

Our Continue the Conversation series offers a variety of forums for adults to gain skills and confidence to talk with their young people about challenging topics. The Continue the Conversation Series includes:

Parenting Adult Coffees (held both in person and virtually) allow participants to discuss relevant topics and gain support and strategies.

Grandparent Coffees (held both in person and virtually) are designed to provide grandparents a place to discuss topics unique to grandparents while receiving support and guidance from one another.

Youth Mental Health First Aid training teaches participants how to identify and help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis.

QPR (Question. Persuade. Refer.) Suicide Prevention Trainings equip parenting adults and school adults with practical and proven ways to recognize warning signs that someone may be contemplating suicide and respond effectively.

At SpeakUp!, we know that when young people feel heard, seen, and understood — they THRIVE.
